MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE! - CHICORY

MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE! - CHICORY

Just like us, our four-legged friends face challenges with their gastrointestinal systems. We know how important prebiotics and a well-balanced diet are for our health, and the same goes for our dogs.

Prebiotics, such as inulin, can significantly enhance digestion and overall gut health in dogs. But why is this important?  Because a dog's gut is often referred to as their "second brain."

This isn't just a catchy phrase - it’s rooted in the incredible connection between gut health and overall well-being; their microbiome.

Our four-legged friends can, unfortunately, experience many of the same gut and digestive ailments that we humans do – which can make it all the worse when you know how your pup can be feeling, especially if you know it’s painful, uncomfortable, and stressful.

What Is Chicory Root?

Often ground or roasted, it has been used in tea for human consumption for years, but there is more to this natural powerhouse than just a tasty drink!

Let’s take a look at a few health benefits chicory root can give to your pet’s gut, digestive, and overall health…

It’s Packed With Inulin!

This wonder plant naturally contains some impressive properties, one of which is its volume of prebiotic fibre inulin – when fresh, the root is composed of nearly 70% inulin!

Inulin is a type of fructan fibre or fructooligosaccharide (FOS), a natural sugar carbohydrate made from fructose molecules that your dog’s body doesn’t digest.

Inulin can act as a prebiotic, feeding and supporting the good bacteria found in your dog’s gut.

Why do good bacteria matter?

Prebiotics effect the levels, species and activity of good bacteria in the gut which, in turn, supports healthy digestion and healthy digestion means good, strong natural defences for your pooch.

Good bacteria can help the digestive system by:

·         Producing certain vitamins, including vitamin K (required for blood clotting)

·         Helping to absorb nutrients

·         Making the environment in the gut less favourable for harmful bacteria

·         Building an effective immune system

It Contains Antioxidants

As well as many minerals, vitamins, and inulin fibre, chicory root also produces and holds a multitude of antioxidants – including the ones commonly known to support a normal inflammatory response.

The antioxidants found in chicory root have also been seen to support liver health and function.  The liver acts as the primary detoxifying organ, which means wonders for your dog’s overall health. With the liver and gut in full health, you four-legged friend has the tools needed to stay in tip-top shape.

So, as you can see, this pretty blue flower has the most amazing powers hidden beneath the soil! 🌱

By feeding your dog Basil’s Superfood Range, with its carefully selected nutrient-rich ingredients, including chicory root, you can ensure that you’re looking after your dog’s health, starting on the inside! 🐶

Proper hydration is essential for maintaining our bodily functions, improving energy levels and ensuring optimal physical and mental performance.  But it’s even more vital for our four-legged friends; they need water in order to stay hydrated and regulate their body temperature to prevent them from overheating.

Our canine companions can only sweat a small amount from their nose and paw pads, so the main way that they lose body heat to cool down is through panting, which results in a lot of water loss through evaporation.  Because of this, keeping your dog hydrated is super important, especially on hot days.

In this blog, we look at the right amount of water your dog needs to drink each day and why they may be drinking too much or not enough, helping you to ensure your pup stays happy and hydrated!
